INTRODUCING...BEYOND BELIEF
It’s been a while since I’ve podcasted. A year and a half to be exact. For so long, I was holding out hope that Self Service would return. It was kind of a bummer, but truthfully? By the time I was realised it wasn’t coming back, I was relieved. It had run its course, and my heart had moved on.
Now, all these months later, I have a new baby ready to be birthed into the world, and I couldn’t be prouder. Introducing…Beyond Belief! It’s my new program, presented by Wonder Media Network, and it’s doozy. The perfect info-tainment for social isolation, I dare say.
Every week on Beyond Belief, you’ll hear from some of the world’s most interesting spiritual thinkers—some you’ve heard of and some you probably, definitely, haven’t. The point of this show? Simply to examine the complexities, convictions, and contradictions of more “marginal” belief systems. It’s on the rise, after all!
We’ll talk everything from UFOs, to stigmata, to psychedelics, to spirit guides—and so much more. It’s gonna be kooky, it’s gonna be mystical, and mostly, I hope it opens your mind in one way or another.
Beyond Belief is for staunch atheists as much as it is spiritual new agers. It’s for the questioning, the seeking, and the playfully curious. It’s for YOU! All of you. Like politics, religion and spirituality seems to be increasingly dividing people into more and more disparate groups—and my goal with this show is not to create another echo chamber where we all reify what we already believe. Quite the opposite.
It’s a space to question, to doubt, to learn, to hear from people we might never get to speak to in our everyday lives, and ultimately—to contemplate our existence, and the ways (both limiting and empowering) that we create meaning and purpose in our small time on earth.
That’s the kind of conversation I think we should be having right now. One that’s honest, critical, hopeful, and above all, just playfully curious when it comes to spirituality. We spend all day with our head in the material. But, admit it, your heart wants you to contemplate the theological, the metaphysical—the spooky even. Even if it’s only to confirm that it’s not for you. And who knows? You might surprise yourself.
The subjects I explore with guests on this show are going to be zany or extreme to some, but they’ll resonate with others. And I think we can all agree that—given that an unquestioning belief in God is dropping hugely among young people—from 83% in 2008 to 66% in 2014, according to the National Science Foundation—that what we’re really talking about is the future of self-determined belief systems. And how we engage with all seekers and their ideas will determine that future’s shape.
