SATAN...THE FEMINIST?

How far have we come from the “Satanic panic” marked 80s and 90s? On this, the debut episode of Beyond Belief, we explore the other side of Satanism. The side occupied by feminists and thinkers of all religious persuasions—and none. My guest is Jex Blackmore, a feminist activist, artist, and prominent Satanist to hear about her take on the Devil.

Story time! When I was a kid, I watched The Exorcist a little too young. I had just been baptised Catholic at the age of 11 or 12 in a cynical bid to get into a “better” high school (weird flex but okay). As part of that process, I learned the Lord’s Prayer and became obsessed with the idea that the Devil was trying to possess me by making me say the prayer backwards in my mind. Retrospectively, it’s clear that this was the compulsive behaviour of a traumatised child. But when I told my mum about it, her hardcore christian past jumped out. 🐐

“You better pray really hard,” she said. “The Devil appears disguised in many forms. I could be him right now!” Comforting and normal! So I prayed and prayed, but the thing was, I didn’t even ~believe~ in the Devil. Deep down, I thought he was just an amalgamation of all my fears, even then. I was exposed to plenty of other faiths from a young age, so why was I so scared of the Devil, despite even not believing it him? 🤔⁠

Great question. And it’s one that I’ve seen so many of us still carrying it around, unanswered. Why are we so scared of something we can typically concede we invented? And who wins, while we’re busy being scared? 🔥⁠

So let’s talk about Satanism. The side occupied by feminists and thinkers of all persuasions, and none. Jex and I cover a lot of ground—it’s pretty much everything you ever wanted to know about *actual* Satanism, and especially, it’s relevancy as a distinctly feminist pursuit. ⁠
